S. Amos II lives in Mississippi, USA. He was 59 when he was diagnosed on April
24, 2007. His initial PSA was 5.6 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 7 and he does not
know his staging, which was probably T1c.. His choice of treatment was Surgery
. Here is his story.
I was told on April 24, 2007 that I had prostate cancer
on both sides of my prostate, but that it was still in the gland. They sent me
to see dr. Adams at the VA in Jackson, Ms. It was there over the next month that
I was given a bone marrow scan, and did the pre/op. on the 24th of July I went
back to the VA in Jackson for my surgery (prostatectomy). They let me go home
on the third day after the surgery and had me come back two weeks later to remove
the staples and the Foley.
I will be going back for my last visit to Jackson
on the tenth of September. They told me that the VA in Biloxi, ms will check my
PSA every three months for the next year or so.
when the doctor at Biloxi
told me I had cancer I ask him what he thought I should do he didn't blink an
eye and said with my age and over all health surgery was what he thought I should
do. so I said do it.
Now I'm in the beginning of my recovery a leakage
problem, but that and the sex thing (short term I hope) I can deal with. they
will get better with time. Any way you look at it this is better than having that
thing growing inside of me.
Looking back on it I still think I did the
right thing, the biggest problem is not being able to go where I want when I want
to, but I'm told this will get better day by day. My brother had the surgery ten
years ago and he is a big help, my 93 year old father has been on meds for his
cancer for ten years so the three of us are going to beat this dog together.
I
think my biggest problem is going to be work since I have always done construction
work I'm a carpenter and it looks like that is going to be out of the question.
I'm now looking into re-training for another field since I'll only be sixty in
October it's too early to think about not working. I will try to update my progress
as it happens keep your chin up and try not to think about the bad side of it,
just think how great the rest of your life is going to be.
