Ian Bass-Galespie lives in California, USA. He was 45 when he was diagnosed in November, 2013. His initial PSA was 2.40 ng/ml, his Gleason Score was 6, and he was staged T1b. His choice of treatment was Non-Invasive (Active Surveillance). Here is his story.

46 yr old diagnosis= local PC w/nodule, Gleason 6/7(3-4) at time of surgery. After a year on Active Surveillance I had an endorectal ultrasound that showed the small tumor I had was bulging a bit & my PSA had gone from 2.6 to 3.2 from July to Oct. I chose robotic prostatectomy at Cedars-Sinai, performed by my Urologist Dr Hyung Kim. Procedure was performed on Dec 12th. Took approx 4 hours. I left the hospital the following day. The most discomfort came as a result of gas building up. I had first bowel movement 2 days later. Catheter was in for 10 days and was uncomfortable some of the time. The night I had it removed I had an awful burning in my penis. This was either a Urinary or yeast infection. I have 5 small incision scars. My Dr was able to spare nerves on both sides of prostate. I have had a few non-erection orgasms(dry) in the month after surgery. I will use Viagra once a month to promote blood flow. My Dr said lab report showed no cancer outside prostate- PSA in 2 months.

UPDATED

February 2016

I am 13 months post robotic prostate removal. My last PSA was in December '15 and it is undetectable. My libido is mildly reduced and I still do not get erections spontaneously, as I did before the surgery. However, I have been able to have orgasm since 3 months post surgery and I have had erections suitable for penetration since August. I have not tried Viagra since then, when it had no effect. I am able to gain erections through self or partner stimulation and the use of a restrictive ring works as well, although not required. I also used a battery operated pump system until September '15 and found it somewhat useful in exercising my penis. Sex has been very enjoyable without having the old response. My wife and I have found lots of new ways to pleasure each other and in some ways it's been a relief not to have that one aspect of myself dominate the experience. Also, since I have no ejaculate the orgasm experience is a less messy one for both my wife and myself. I continue to use good nutrition and exercise as ongoing treatment for my overall health. Be well.

UPDATED

March 2017

I am now 2 full years past treatment and have had no recurrence of cancer. The only lasting issues are sporadic moments of leaking urine (very small amount) when twisting or with sexual activity & lack of erections. Use of Viagra(100 mg) and Cialis(20 mg) have been largely unsuccessful and frustrating. Also, the Cialis gives me a dull headache lasting for a few days. Otherwise, I am still able to have an orgasm.
