I was diagnosed October 2011 with Prostate cancer. It was a shock. I had 2 high PSA readings and was sent for a biopsy. The biopsy was ok but I got an infection a day later and had to spend a weekend in hospital. I was diagnosed with intermediate prostate. In February 2012 I was given a hormone shot to reduce the prostate and had a follow up shot in may, no real side effects except for hot flashes.
I have now been given a date for the seed implants June 12th. My family and friends have been very supportive and this is very important.
Well had the Brachytherapy on June 12th. Went to the local cancer clinic, really nice staff in Kelowna. Was put on the drip, walked to the operating room and given the general anesthetic and then woke up in the recovery room, a little groggy and sore between the legs. Was driven home, managed to pee, it burned a little but nothing else. First day at home no problem apart from feeling dozy and sore. Taking medication to ensure I pass water but nothing else. Did not need painkillers.
So far so good. Everyone has been really supportive.
Well one week since the operation (80 seeds inserted) Good news no side effects apart from some soreness. Seem to be tired but getting better. Keeping my fingers crossed no side effects. Have the barrage of tests, MRI etc on July 13th and then see specialist 2 weeks later.
So far would strongly recommend this treatment for those who are nervous about deciding.
Well, here it is, Oct 2012 and my original implants were in June 2012. No real side effects, the frequency of urination is reducing and the hot flashes from the hormone treatment is reducing. I had my first PSA test and results were 0.03. My surgeon was pleased and said I am on the right track. He does not need to see me until June 2013 which I am taking to be a good sign.
For anyone with my symptoms I would strongly recommend Brachytherapy, fairly easy procedure and nominal side effects.
It has been 6 months since the seed implant but I have noticed an increased depressed state, I am going to a therapist today. Has anyone else had these symptoms after treatment?
June 2013, one year since the seeds implanted, PSA now at 0.04 Doctor said come back in 12 months so good news. The only side effect is the hormones have not yet left and my testosterone level is only 6.
Overall really good news.
Just an update, things going well and now no side effects. Do not see the doctor until June 2014, that should be a good sign.
June 2014 my yearly check up. The result was an increase in PSA from .04 to .08. However my specialist said that was normal and the result was still very low and he does not need to see me for another 2 years. So, so far so good.
Well, another 6 months and latest test less than .10, that is good news. No side effects.
Had my half year test, PSA still below 0.10 considered undetectable. Feeling fine, have now retired. Definitely recommend Brachyotherapy.
Went for my latest PSA test, still 0.04 undetectable. Still no side effects apart from having to get up once per night for urination. Feel generally good.
Continue to have no symptoms and very pleased to see a continued low PSA count.
I am still doing fine. Latest PSA result 0.10. No issues, very happy to be alive.
